Childbirth Education Training Tips, By Jillian Freeland, Gadsden, Alabama
Tip #1 - read this all the way to the end... I have a tiny gift waiting for you!

You have registered and you can’t wait to start working on your precertification work! Having been in your shoes, let me give you some tips to tackle your work bit by bit and have fun doing it!

When I signed up for Birth Boot Camp, I registered the day before the deadline, even though it was suggested that you give yourself 4-6 months to accomplish the precertification requirements. I knew I was in for a wild ride, but I was able to tackle all the work and I felt prepared for what was ahead of me. Since my training, they have streamlined the precertification work to make it easier to accomplish!

So, here are some of my tips to tackling your precertification work!

  1. Read over all the modules - get an idea of the big picture.
  2. Order your books or see if your local library has copies of them.
  3. Find out when and where the local breastfeeding support groups meet and schedule it on your calendar - You don’t want to miss the chance to attend!
Pro Tip - Call the leader of the group and make sure they are still gathering. Let them know you hope to attend so that you can refer students to their support group. (There is nothing worse than showing up to find out they canceled for some reason or another!)
  4. Get the bloodborne pathogens class out of the way. It won’t take long and it feels so good crossing it off the list!
  5. Start on your Community Resource List - this will be a great place to begin networking and informing other professionals about how you can work together to serve your community! (But don’t worry about the networking just yet, worry about getting their information)
  6. Print out a copy of the study guide and keep it handy while you read the books, watch the online classes, and documentaries!
  7.  Begin your Birth Boot Camp Online Classes! This was my FAVORITE part of training! It will fuel your passion and grow your excitement!
  8. Watch the documentaries; they are super easy to check of the list! If you have any other trainees near by, it is fun to get together and watch the documentary together and a great way to kick off study groups!
  9. Study Guide Tips -  Read all the questions first so you have an idea of the content. Answer the questions you know first! Keep the study guide handy while you read and watch the online classes!
  10. Last, but not least… the reading! Create a schedule and tackle the books chapter by chapter! Pro Tip - search audible for the books so you can listening while accomplishing other tasks. OR download them on kindle and use the phone feature ‘talk to text’!
The biggest tip of all... Are you ready for it?
Your Trainers want to help you! Talk to them, ask them about questions that are stumping you! Just call them to connect!
If you haven't signed up for Birth Boot Camp Instructor training and you are ready to take this exciting step follow this link to register!

Ok, so now for the gift! I have created a "suggested" study guide schedule! (Mind you, it is very much based off of my personal learning style- which you can learn more about here - but it could come in handy!) Click the link below to view and download the schedule!

Becoming an Amazing Birth Boot Camp Instructor: How I Learn Affects How I Teach

Understanding your learning style will help you accomplish the per-certification work more efficiently and become an AMAZING Birth Boot Camp Instructor! We are often a combination of multiple leaerning styles, but there seems to be one or two that are dominant. For Example, I am mostly a tactile learner, I like to get my hands on things. Second to that I am a visual and auditory learner.

When I was preparing to teach my first Birth Boot Camp classes, I felt the need to practice out loud what I would say and how I would delivery it. When I did this, I was able to communicate with better clarity. I quickly realized that prior to  practicing out loud, I had to organize my thoughts, so I made index cards. If I didn’t do these two things, I felt inept and nervous which resulted in poor communication.

By allowing your learning style to guide your preparation YOU CAN BECOME AN AMAZING BIRTH BOOT CAMP INSTRUCTOR!

Below is a list of learning styles and their descriptions as written by Justin Ferriman.

  1. Visual: These people prefer to use pictures, images, diagrams, colors, and mind maps.
  2. Physical: These are the “learn by doing” people that use their body to assist in their learning. Drawing diagrams, using physical objects, or role playing are all strategies of the Physical learner.
  3. Aural: People who prefer using sound (obviously), rhythms, music, recordings, clever rhymes, and so on.
  4. Verbal: The verbal learner is someone who prefers using words, both in speech and in writing to assist in their learning. They make the most of word based techniques, scripting, and reading content aloud.
  5. Logical: The people who prefer using logic, reasoning, and “systems” to explain or understand concepts. They aim to understand the reasons behind the learning, and have a good ability to understand the bigger picture.
  6. Social: These people are the ones who enjoy learning in groups or with other people, and aim to work with others as much as possible.
  7. Solitary: The solitary learner prefers to learn alone and through self-study.

What learning style do you most relate to?

To take a short quiz and learn more about your learning styles follow this link: Learning Style Quiz.

Let me encourage you, we all have different strengths and weaknesses. Don’t try to be like someone else! When we learn to work within our personal strengths we will feel so much more confident about our own abilities!

Happy Teaching!

You Don't Have To Be An EXPERT To Begin The Journey!

I was so terrified of beginning this journey, of becoming a childbirth educator or a doula.  What if someone asked me a question and I didn’t know the answer?  How much research would it take to feel fully prepared? But fear is never the beginning of growth; or is it?

Nelson Mandela says it beautifully “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

When was the last time you dreamed big for yourself, dreamed a dream you didn’t think you could achieve?

Underneath your fears lie great opportunity. It’s time to allow yourself to go after your dream, to tear down the invisible barriers that you have built up in your mind that say you can’t, and tell yourself that you can! Find the courage to make life-changing decisions.

All that inspiration to say… Don’t allow your fear of not being an expert in the field of birth to stop you from beginning the journey. Birth Boot Camp will equip you and provide you with the tools to become an expert.

Birth Boot Camp...
  1. Wants you to succeed!
  2. Will give you to tools to be successful!

    2. It is comprehensive; it has all the information your community needs!
    3. It is scripted, not because you HAVE to read it THEIR way, but to assist you and provide you with information at your fingertips.
  8. Has the most positive, uplifting community of birth workers!
  9. Birth Boot Camp will leave you feeling confident and ready to achieve your dreams of serving in the birth community!

Remember… you don’t have to be an expert to begin this journey, Birth Boot Camp will give to all the tools you need to become one!
